The GRAMMY Foundation’s Discovery Through Music curriculum will teach young children to be interactive and creative music makers, while building connections to view, understand, and interpret knowledge within all areas of learning and life. The learning modules will nourish the culture and support the social value of music education while connecting and engaging consumers, customers, and communities through music.
As a sequenced series of lessons, the program will provide two, four-week modules for the following three age groups: Kindergarten-1st-2nd grade, 3rd - 4th grade, and 5th - 6th Grade. The lessons will be available on-line, through a password protected site, and will encourage and invite teachers and students to explore and discover standards based music education and integrated, cross-curricular connections, while providing professional development for the educator. The lessons will provide continual opportunity for students and teachers to interact within the creative learning and teaching process while promoting the innovations needed for future generations of music makers.
The lessons will provide sequential, creative, and fun opportunities to understand and apply the basic elements of music (beat, tempo, rhythm, pitch, melody, harmony, dynamics, timbre, and texture) while integrating language arts, math, science, and technology.
• Lessons in the Kindergarten-1st-2nd grade module will focus on auditory/sound discrimination, rhythm, and pitch, so students can explore the world of sound while given the tools to define what they hear in their world. Students will develop informal music notation to represent pitch, dynamics, and timbre (tone color) as well as seek patterns of sound. Through the natural flow of language, students will experience rhythm and transfer this to stick notation while creating and seeking patterns in pitch, timbre, and dynamics.
• Lessons in the 3rd and 4th grade Discovery Through Music Modules will continue to build upon the skills from the previous K-1-2 modules, yet apply developmentally appropriate skills needed to read and write music while integrating this into language arts. Students will compose and perform music with a working understanding and application of the elements of music.
• Lessons in the 5th and 6th grade Discovery Through Music Modules will further discover and apply the elements of music in composition. The students will have opportunities to perform their work and venture into the world of the recording arts, connecting their music to real world events and performers. Students will have an opportunity to create lyrics and submit these for a local and/or national competition.
Discovery Through Music Modules will provide all students with the ability to create, play, and apply their musical knowledge within other subject matter and to engage in the future of music making.
“Learning to think creatively in one discipline opens the door to understanding creative thinking in all disciplines. Educating this universal creative imagination is the key to producing lifelong learners capable of shaping the innovations of tomorrow.” Root-Bernstein, Michéle and Robert, Sparks of Genius, 1999).
